How do you profile a simultaneous interpreter?
A simultaneous interpreter is a language expert who interprets for listeners in another language while the speaker delivers his/her speech in an uninterrupted manner. This is just the contrary to a consecutive interpreter as the latter waits for the speaker to pause and to allow the interpreter the time to do the interpreting. Simultaneous interpreting is the most common type of interpreting at conferences hence it is often referred to as conference interpreting, but it is the most difficult type. Only highly trained and duly talented experts can do it as it takes years to master the skill.
When is it necessary to employ simultaneous interpreters?
You will need a simultaneous interpreter when there is at least one guest attending your conference or meeting who cannot understand the language spoken in the room, and the speaker has neither time nor intention to pause regularly.
Modes of interpreting: Simultaneous Interpreting
When interpreting in a simultaneous mode, an interpreter translates the message from the source language in the target-language as fast as he/she can process it, while the source-language speaker delivers his/her speech without pauses. It works like this: the interpreter sits in a sound-proof booth and speaks into a microphone, while hearing the source-language speaker via earphones; the audience hear the interpreter’s voice via their earphones.
You will recall that there are always two interpreters alternating in a booth. Just as any human a simultaneous interpreter is not able to concentrate on rendering the information in another language for more than 20-30 minutes; the process is so mentally intensive and sometimes stressful that it can exhaust one interpreter rather quickly. So it is common practice for interpreters to work in pairs all the more so as it provides for a better and more effective communication.
